ABOUT DR. MARGARET WADE-LEWIS MEMORIAL 5K RUN/WALK

Join us on Saturday, May 2, 2020 for the 2nd Dr. Margaret Wade-Lewis Memorial 5K Run/Walk. Sponsored by First World alumni, the SUNY New Paltz Wellness and Recreational Center and PACE Runs Race Productions, all proceeds will be donated to the Dr. Margaret Wade-Lewis Endowment Scholarship Fund. The scholarship honors her legacy as beloved chair and faculty member of SUNY New Paltz's Department of Black Studies who joined the College in 1974. A well-respected educator, mentor and student advocate who had a profound impact on the lives of countless New Paltz students, especially students of color, Dr. Wade-Lewis was also a skilled and dedicated administrator. In 1988 she helped found the Scholars Mentorship Program (formerly the Minority Recruitment Program), and as its director oversaw its development into a national model for recruiting, retaining, advising and supporting high-achieving students of color in higher education.

Beloved in the mid- Hudson Valley,  she was past Chair of the New Paltz School District Task Force for Change and Diversity; founder and secretary of the advocacy group, Concerned Parents of New Paltz, a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and served as a board member of the Reizod Foundation, an organization founded to give new shoes to children in need, for which she chaired the Volunteer Committee. For over 25 years she was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Poughkeepsie (Rev. E. Clayton Wade, Pastor) where she served as Superintendent of the Church School, Chair of the Board of Christian Education Ministry, teacher for the Junior/Junior High Class, Director of Black History Month Programs and chair of the Christian Education Ministry.

Established through the generosity of alumni, friends and family, the endowment provides scholarships to New Paltz undergraduate students who are accepted participants of the Scholars Mentorship Program (SMP) and actively engage in leadership and community service either on- or off-campus.

Dr. Margaret Wade-Lewis passed away on December 30, 2009, after more than three decades of service to the SUNY New Paltz community. In 2010 the endowment funding the Minority Recruitment Program was named in her honor: Dr. Margaret Wade-Lewis Memorial Scholarship Endowment.
